Household Spray Cleaner and Natural Sink Scrub

While few people would probably classify housecleaning as a fun chore or something they enjoy, it can be made a more pleasant (and earth friendly!) chore by using natural cleaning products.

Here are a few easy recipes for cleaning products you can make yourself, using essential oils and natural ingredients:

Herbal Spray Cleanser

2 cups hot water

10 drops thyme essential oil

1/4 cup washing soda (found in the laundry aisle)

Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray on surfaces and wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Thyme EO has strong cleansing powers as well as a freshening scent which many consider to be pleasant. The Thyme EO can be mixed with lemon, lavender or grapefruit essential oils for a pleasant citrus “twist” and additional cleansing properties. Be careful spraying on treated surfaces, as the essential oils are potent and can destroy finished surfaces such as varnished wood or surfaces sealed with plastics, waxes or oils.

Natural Sink Scrub

1/4 cup washing soda (found in the laundry aisle)

1/4 cup baking soda

8 drops rosemary, eucalyptus or tea tree essential oil

3/4 cup vinegar for rinsing

Combine washing soda, baking soda and essential oil in an airtight container and shake well to blend. Sprinkle a small amount into the sink and scrub with a damp sponge. Rinse the sink with vinegar. Then rinse again with hot water. For stubborn stains, allow this formula to rest on the stain for several minutes. Then scrub the sink and rinse with vinegar and hot water.
