    Botanical Name: Valeriana officinalis

    Plant Part: Root

    Country of Origin: China

    Method of Extraction: Steam Distillation

    This high altitude oil naturally contains more effective components than, for instance, Valerian grown in India. Research has found that Valerian root grown at higher altitudes has higher concentrations of valeptorates, one of the primary compounds responsible for this oil's therapeutic effects. Highly sedative in action. Due to its "dirty-socks" smell it is not an oil for perfumery. As a relaxing/sleep inducing blend it has no equal. In ayurveda it's used in suppressing urine.

    It is also known to calm down dogs and cats, although cats do tend to be more sensitive to essential oils than dogs. Use with caution on dogs and cats. Avoid use on sensitive & couperose skin. Useful for varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Avoid in pregnancy and with babies and children. Blends well with any citrus essential oil, as well as with any of the conifers. (Cannot ship via air or ocean w/o appropriate documentation, cannot ship via postal air services. Flashpoint: 45C and 132F, UN#1993, flammable liquid.)

    I bought valerian to have on hand for when I have tachycardia, a racing heartrate, which valarian is supposed to help. I have had occaision to use it for that reason 3-4 times already. Each time I applied a drop to my nostrils and breath deeply and also apply to my neck. It works almost immediately to resolve my tachycardia...like magic!! I could not do without this oil. I also quite like the scent. Thanks Camden-Grey!
    Perfect for sleep!

    I love this oil and have used it to help aid a few clients including myself with sleep! It is deep and woody smelling & it is potent! I personally use this blended with some French Lavender, and Rose Otto before going to bed to help me sleep. I'm a shift worker, and a student.... So can we say sleep deprivation and disruption to the Circadian Rhythm! This oil helps me sleep like a rock with uninterrupted sleep! I did use 2 drops on each wrist undiluted, but my other half complained it was too loud, so I blended it to soften it up a bit and it worked like a charm. My clients who were having chronic sleepless nights have also reported that their sleep is now normal as well! Go Valerian!
    Doesn't smell as bad as I expected

    I've been told by several people that Valerian smells like smelly old socks but when I ordered this to help me fall asleep more easily, I was pleasantly surprised that it doesn't smell that way to me. It smells musky, earthy, and slightly fungal, but not offensive. I agree with the reviewer who said that the more-appealing-than-expected scent is probably due to the quality. I also think that it offers a unique undertone that I may even use in natural perfumery when blended with some citrus or herbaceous oils because its warm, musky, earthy, slightly fungal scent is very unusual and extremely comforting. My cat tends to dislike essential oils, but when I use this to help sleep he comes by to investigate and happily sniffs at the air.

    I purchased valerian root for my sisters dog that is terrified of thunderstorms and fireworks. I actually used it on the dog the following day, i mixed three drops of the valerian with a tablespoon of almond oil and massaged it round his chest area and the backs of his ears, within ten minutes the dog had stopped pacing and drooling and was actually calm without being knocked out.I know valerian root can be expensive but its worth buying if you have a dog that has problems with the thunderstorms, it tends to smell like old socks and vinegar but it really works and is worth the money.Cats are more sensative to it so i use less drops per tablespoon.
    Woody fun

    I have to disagree with the description above - I find this oil wonderful for perfumery. It adds a light-woody, unusual, very exotic note to blends - but isn't overpowering. I find the 'dirty socks' smell more typical of the dried herb - there are some funky notes in the pure oil, but mostly it smells great to me even on its own and the odd notes recede when blended. I haven't tried this from other sources, but this strikes me as very high-quality, very fresh-smelling, clear oil. As usual, very pleased with my purchase.

    Thanks for browsing thru this section which contains answers to many questions that are often asked of us. Here we explain where to locate CofA and SDS for a product, how we dispense and package our products, how products should be stored, basic terminology and the wait time for bulk products to ship from our warehouse. FYI: We're closed on Fridays.

    Certificate of Analysis (CofA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). We publish on our website those documents for most of our products, some products don't provide either because the product doesn't require it. In this same section where you're at now, look to the tab to the left titled Documents, click on it and that's where you'll find either document for the product you seek. If you do not find the document you require, please email us at customerservice@camdengrey.com so we can research further.

    BULK ITEMS: When a customer adds a bulk item to the cart, the customer’s immediately shown on the screen how many number of days should be allowed for the bulk product to arrive at our warehouse. If the bulk item happens to be in stock, we’ll ship sooner than the customer would expect. As we emerge from Covid, logistics operations are not yet back to normal, what used to arrive at our warehouse in 3 days now takes much longer. Should a vendor inform us the ordered product will take longer than what’s mentioned on our website we’ll email the customer with the latest information.

    TERMINOLOGY:

    EO = essential oil

    FO = fragrance oil

    HOW PRODUCTS ARE DISPENSED...

    BOTTLING/PACKAGING:

    Essential oils: in 1/32 oz. to 1/4 oz...amber glass vials with orifice reducers. ½ oz. to 2 oz...in amber glass bottles with white caps and Eurodroppers...3 to 4 oz. in amber glass bottles with black caps and without orifice reducers...7 oz. in aluminum bottles...15 oz. in amber glass bottles with black caps...10 & 25 lbs. in HDPE plastic containers with wide mouths although, occasionally, 25 lbs. may be dispensed in factory-issued metal containers with pouring spouts.

    28 lbs. of carrier oils and other liquids are dispensed in individual HDPE plastic gallon containers with handles, each holds the purchased net weight of liquid.

    30+ lbs. of carrier oils, other liquids, soft butters, Castile gel and other products are dispensed in plastic HDPE pails w/metal handles & pouring spouts in the lid; those products may remain inside the pails indefinitely when properly stored. After Covid, we reserve the right to use any packaging/dispensing container available to us and not mentioned above because it continues to be difficult many times to restock the same packaging container or material used in the past.

    NOTE: An EO may safely remain inside an aluminum container for up to 3 months, but if storing longer than 3 months the oil should be transferred to amber glass. Fragrances and carrier oils up to 8 lbs. may remain inside HDPE plastic bottles indefinitely. If the customer at any time feels more comfortable transferring a product to glass this should be done. ALL PRODUCTS ARE DISPENSED BY WEIGHT, THUS, SOME CONTAINERS MAY BE FILLED HIGHER THAN OTHERS DEPENDING ON THE WEIGHT AND VISCOSITY OF EACH PRODUCT.

    Raw materials/ingredients are dispensed by weight. Many customers ask how many ounces in a pound, there are 16 ounces in one pound. These are not fluid ounces, they are ounces by weight.

    HOW TO STORE: EOs, FOs and BUTTERS should be stored in tightly-sealed containers away from direct light and heat. Some EOs could be highly flammable, keep away from open flames. Keep all liquids and powders you purchase from Camden-Grey tightly capped and away from the reach of children, the elderly or infirm and pets. Refrigerating butters could adversely affect the consistency of the butter, please join our Forum if you need to learn how to handle, work with and store products.
