    Laboratory-grade plastic pH strips by Machery-Nagel of Germany, gradation of 2.0 to 9.0 recommended for testing the pH of soaps and other toiletries. These high quality test strips feature up to four different indicator pads to cover the complete pH range. The color chart exactly matches both color and position of the pads on the strips which enables highly precise pH-determination and makes the test strips rapid and reliable. The dye on the strips will not contaminate your samples, there should not be any possibility of color bleeding.

    Plastic test strips provide more accurate readings than paper test strips. These excellent strips cover the full range you will encounter when testing soap. They read in half unit increments. When using, keep test strip in the solution until the color stops changing, between 45 seconds and one minute. Storage: Away from direct light and heat, store in original container. Measuring the pH of soap accurately saves you time and problems. (Pack of 100)

    Soap pH: Should not be over 10

    Lotion pH: 5 to 6

    Hair product pH: 5 to 6

    To test soap: Wet the soap as if you were washing your hands with the bar, this will create bubbles. Apply the strip to the wet part of the soap, obtain your results.

    FYI: Any solution with a pH above 7 is considered an alkali or base, any solution with a pH below 7 is considered an acid.

    The gradations of these strips are:

    2.0  2.5  3.0  3.5  4.0  4.5  5.0  5.5  6.0  6.5  7.0  7.5  8.0  8.5  9.0

    More information about pH:

    Every piece of matter you can think of which is in an aqueous solution (water-based, in other words) has a pH measure. The pH scale is not an absolute scale; it is relative to a set of standard solutions whose pH is established by international agreement. Depending on this measure the product or item can be considered acid rich or alkaline rich or neutral. The scale ranges from 0-14, the higher the number being more alkaline, the lower the number being more acidic and 7 which is right in the middle being neutral. Pure water is said to be neutral. The pH for pure water at 25 deg. C is close to 7.0.

    It is like the Richter scale for earthquakes, though: just because one product has a ph of 4 and one of 3 does not mean that there is not much difference. For instance: a refreshing glass of orange juice has a pH of 3.5. If you go to a pH of 3, though, you have a nice, "refreshing" glass of vinegar.

    Human skin and hair have a natural ph of 4.5-5. Therefore anything above or below the natural PH is contrasting with our hair or skin. Take, for example, a chemical hair relaxer, Its pH ranges anywhere from 11-14 and what does it do? It alters the curl pattern of our hair.

    What about soaps? If a soap has a high alkaline content (8-10), it will make your skin very dry and tight.

    On the other side of the pH scale, chemical peels have a high acid content. Peels with a pH of 3 may only cause superficial flaking while a peel with a pH of 1 (which would only be available to doctors) can easily give you chemical burns if not properly administered and rapidly neutralized.

    For lotion making, one of the reasons that pH is important (other than its effect on the skin) is that preservatives tend to operate within specific pH ranges. If your lotion is out of that range, you might not have an effective preservation system, and your lotion can grow "stuff". There are a variety of pH balancing agents, including citric acid, sodium hydroxide and baking soda.

    Thanks for browsing thru this section which contains answers to many questions that are often asked of us. Here we explain where to locate CofA and SDS for a product, how we dispense and package our products, how products should be stored, basic terminology and the wait time for bulk products to ship from our warehouse. FYI: We're closed on Fridays.

    Certificate of Analysis (CofA) and Safety Data Sheet (SDS). We publish on our website those documents for most of our products, some products don't provide either because the product doesn't require it. In this same section where you're at now, look to the tab to the left titled Documents, click on it and that's where you'll find either document for the product you seek. If you do not find the document you require, please email us at customerservice@camdengrey.com so we can research further.

    BULK ITEMS: When a customer adds a bulk item to the cart, the customer’s immediately shown on the screen how many number of days should be allowed for the bulk product to arrive at our warehouse. If the bulk item happens to be in stock, we’ll ship sooner than the customer would expect. As we emerge from Covid, logistics operations are not yet back to normal, what used to arrive at our warehouse in 3 days now takes much longer. Should a vendor inform us the ordered product will take longer than what’s mentioned on our website we’ll email the customer with the latest information.

    TERMINOLOGY:

    EO = essential oil

    FO = fragrance oil

    HOW PRODUCTS ARE DISPENSED...

    BOTTLING/PACKAGING:

    Essential oils: in 1/32 oz. to 1/4 oz...amber glass vials with orifice reducers. ½ oz. to 2 oz...in amber glass bottles with white caps and Eurodroppers...3 to 4 oz. in amber glass bottles with black caps and without orifice reducers...7 oz. in aluminum bottles...15 oz. in amber glass bottles with black caps...10 & 25 lbs. in HDPE plastic containers with wide mouths although, occasionally, 25 lbs. may be dispensed in factory-issued metal containers with pouring spouts.

    28 lbs. of carrier oils and other liquids are dispensed in individual HDPE plastic gallon containers with handles, each holds the purchased net weight of liquid.

    30+ lbs. of carrier oils, other liquids, soft butters, Castile gel and other products are dispensed in plastic HDPE pails w/metal handles & pouring spouts in the lid; those products may remain inside the pails indefinitely when properly stored. After Covid, we reserve the right to use any packaging/dispensing container available to us and not mentioned above because it continues to be difficult many times to restock the same packaging container or material used in the past.

    NOTE: An EO may safely remain inside an aluminum container for up to 3 months, but if storing longer than 3 months the oil should be transferred to amber glass. Fragrances and carrier oils up to 8 lbs. may remain inside HDPE plastic bottles indefinitely. If the customer at any time feels more comfortable transferring a product to glass this should be done. ALL PRODUCTS ARE DISPENSED BY WEIGHT, THUS, SOME CONTAINERS MAY BE FILLED HIGHER THAN OTHERS DEPENDING ON THE WEIGHT AND VISCOSITY OF EACH PRODUCT.

    Raw materials/ingredients are dispensed by weight. Many customers ask how many ounces in a pound, there are 16 ounces in one pound. These are not fluid ounces, they are ounces by weight.

    HOW TO STORE: EOs, FOs and BUTTERS should be stored in tightly-sealed containers away from direct light and heat. Some EOs could be highly flammable, keep away from open flames. Keep all liquids and powders you purchase from Camden-Grey tightly capped and away from the reach of children, the elderly or infirm and pets. Refrigerating butters could adversely affect the consistency of the butter, please join our Forum if you need to learn how to handle, work with and store products.
