    Botanical Name: Evernia prunastri

    Plant Part: Lichen

    Country of Origin: France

    Method of Extraction: Solvent extraction

Oakmoss is not a true flowering plant but a lichen (algae + fungus) that is extracted for its fragrance. Oakmoss grows well on the trunks of the Oak tree. Oakmoss absolute has an intense aroma reminiscent of a damp forest floor, the aroma can be described as mossy and smoky.  This absolute is used mainly in perfumery.  It's not to be used for direct skin application, must first be properly diluted, not to be used in or near the eyes.

This Oakmoss is not low in atranol nor is it IFRA compliant.  Oakmoss absolutes which meet those two conditions do not offer the same mossy aroma (demanded by many perfumers) as non-compliant Oakmoss absolutes do.  For this reason, we do not stock IFRA compliant Oakmoss absolute.

The aroma of Oakmoss absolute is said to be uplifting, cooling and calming. Its properties are more emotional and spiritual than physical.  Color and appearance may vary from batch to batch. Blends well with cedarwood, citrus, pine, rosemary and vetiver.  This absolute is insoluble in water.  Flashpoint: 212 F.

FYI:  This absolute is used extensively in perfumery. Oakmoss products form important parts of the notes in all fougere, chypre or ‘moss’ perfumes and they are common ingredients in colognes, crepe de Chines, forest notes, new mown hay, pine fragrances, lavender bouquets, Oriental bases, fancy or modern bases, etc. They can lend body and naturalness, rich pleasant undertones and high fixative value in numerous types of floral fragrances as well.

INCI: Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) Extract.  Country of origin:  France.

Contraindications (dermal); Hypersensitive, diseased or damaged skin; infants & children, pregnant women, the elderly.  (Rev. 7/11/23-VG)

This absolute was one of the best investments I've made. It smells like a fresh, clean, forest floor with sweet top notes. Smells very similar to the heart of most "sport" colognes in the market. You'll have to dilute it with another oil prior to use, since it's very thick out of the jar.

Another item that is very hard to find, and CG carries it for an excellent price. I wish I would have ordered more than I did since I am already out of it, having used it as a fixative in solid perfume but at the same time making it one of the base notes in one of my blends. The scent is just right, not too "green" and yet woodsy. It is both stimulating and calming.
    My favorite!

I could not get enough of this smell that smells like flowery, wet woods, and earth. Intense like patchouli but not in that incense/intense category. This absolute can be difficult to find- thanks CG! I've used it in CP soaps as a minor constituent, as such it adds depth, a bottom note that friends, family, and customers really like. I'm going to try using it alone in CP soap or in a solid perfume with a cypress or spruce plus orange/lime/lemon for a top note since I find that citrus scents, probably because of the low flash point, do not contribute enough to CP fragrance blends.
    OMG! The smell is wonderful!

I purchased this product because I wanted to make some scents for men. I hadn't planned on falling in love with it myself! When I smell it, I think of a huge forest with ancient trees, and an old stump soft from decay and covered in dark green moss. It's a beautiful color, too - dark, dark green as to be almost black. Very pleased with my purchase!
Ah, Mister Oakmoss, How Do We Love Thee...

There is no other aroma like that of oakmoss. It is rich, spicy, woody, green, arborous and... well, fantastic. It is a thick, resinous compound and sometimes a pain to work with as it lacks physical affinity for other oils in blending. But oh, the trouble is so worth it. Mr. Oakmoss is a fussy customer but he knows his strengths and unique value. He will reward you if you remain loyal to him and give him his proper due. CG's Oakmoss Absolute is glorious, thick, rich and green and comes at the best price I've found for such a quality product.
    I'm in love.

I had heard of Oakmoss & always wanted to get my hands on some. When it arrived I did not know what to expect, would it be good? Would it be unremarkable? I picked the container & was immediately fascinated by the deep(almost black), jewel toned color. I opened it & it looked like green honey! Wow! And the fragrance? Sweet, rich & not what I was expecting. I wanted to put it on biscuits! Thank you Camden-Grey!
The best price on a valuable perfumery ingredient

I'm quite happy with the oakmoss absolute. Ever wondered where that "classic cologne smell" comes from? This is the stuff. It is thick, viscous and bright emerald green, with a very sweet smell and a stable dry-down. As resinous ingredients go, it's quite blendable: I recommend pre-diluting with Jojoba or another stable carrier oil, as it has a very strong aroma and can easily overtake the other scents in a blend!

    HOW PRODUCTS ARE DISPENSED...

    BOTTLING/PACKAGING:

Essential oils: Are sold only in the quantities/net weights listed on our website. These oils are shipped to us by the distiller or manufacturer in industry-standard metal or plastic containers and that’s how we ship them to you.

Carrier oils and most other liquids are dispensed in individual HDPE plastic pails or containers with some type of handle, each container holds the purchased net weight of liquid.

Soft butters such as Horsetail and Almond are dispensed in plastic HDPE pails w/metal handles; those butters may remain inside the pails indefinitely when properly stored. Hard butters such as Cocoa are dispensed factory-wrapped in plastic and placed inside a box. Castile Gel is dispensed in a self-contained cubitainer with pouring spout.

NOTE: While the packaging methods mentioned above are generalized, we reserve the right to dispense and ship in any available container. If a customer at any time feels more comfortable transferring an essential or carrier oil to glass, this should be done.

Raw materials/ingredients are sold and dispensed by weight. Many customers ask how many ounces are in a pound, there are 16 ounces in one pound. These are not fluid ounces, they are ounces by weight.

HOW TO STORE: EOs, FOs and BUTTERS should be stored in tightly-sealed containers away from direct light and heat. Some EOs and FOs could be highly flammable, keep away from open flames and from varnished or wood surfaces. Keep all liquids and powders you purchase from Camden-Grey tightly capped and away from the reach of children, the elderly or infirm and pets. Refrigerating butters could adversely affect the consistency of a butter, please join our Forum if you need to learn how to handle, work with and store products.
