Homemade Play-Doh with Essential and Fragrance Oils

Playing with dough can be an instant trip down memory lane, back to childhood. One thing that can make it extra fun is to incorporate great fragrances and colors into the dough; it's a great time to experiment with your favorite skin safe essential oils like lavender and mint, as well as fragrance oils, food color, mica and cosmetic grade glitter. (Of course, please be careful not to get the dough in your eyes or give it to children too young to handle it safely. )

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1 cup warm water

½ cup salt

1 tablespoon canola oil

½ tablespoon cream of tartar

3 drops of essential oil or fragrance oil of choice

Color to taste (mica, cosmetic grade glitter, food color, etc.)

Directions

1. Add all of the ingredients except the fragrance/color to a pot. Heat on low while stirring constantly.

2. Keep stirring until dough starts to thicken

3. Once the dough does start to thicken and stirring becomes difficult, turn off the heat and remove the pot from the stove.

4. Let the mixture stir until lukewarm. Then add in essential/fragrance oil and color. You can separate the dough into pieces and color/scent each one differently.

You can also experiment with using different essential oils that have different properties and developing your own essential oil play dough blends.
